What I Wore: Black Makes You Slimmer Edition

It has been way too long since I posted anything fashion related, so I decided that today would be the day to break back into my “what I wore” posts. Today, I am sharing two outfits from the “black makes you look slimmer” category. I have to be careful with black. Sometimes I look like an older Irish grandmother when I wear it. I prefer navy blue to black 95 percent of the time but there are days when black will win out.

When I worked for the church, black became a staple in my wardrobe for the first time ever in my life. Planning/attending two funerals a week will do that. Instead of just going for “all black” outfits I looked for pieces that had black, grey and cream in them to break up the black wall of Ireland.

My first outfit is what I wore today to Mass, and to teach my Confirmation prep class. Comfort is key when you’re going to be at church for four hours straight. The slacks are a pattern mix of cream and black houndstooth with an overlay of black polka dots from Lane Bryant. I don’t remember when I bought them, probably last year or the year before. The knit top with the lace shoulder/sleeve detail is from Lands End, grey flats with the graphic metal details are Bandolino on sale at DSW (two years ago at least).

I am always looking to bring in pops of color to break up the dreary factor so today I chose grey and turquoise. I have had both the earrings and the necklace for quite some time and I don’t have a clue where I found them. I know, I know, fashion blogger fail.

The second outfit is a black tank I’ve had for several seasons, dark grey and black houndstooth check slacks and a fabulous cream waterfall sweater with black polka dots both from Lane Bryant. The flats were also from Lane Bryant a season or three ago. The whole thing cost less than $75 on sale, including shoes. I have worn this one two or three times a month. Sometimes I will switch out the polka dot sweater for a cardigan in hot pink or dove grey. Both work well.

Both of these looks are comfortable, yet fashionable. They can easily be worn from fall to early spring, and the cream and black polka dot sweater can be done year round I think. It just lightens things up, don’t you think?
